<Poem>

I AM no other than the wild man of Ch'u
Who greeted Confucius with a mad song of derision.
In my hand I grasp a green jade staff
In the morning I leave behind the Yellow Crane pagoda;
Among the five peaks I search for the secret of immortality
Reckoning nothing of the length of the journey
For my whole life-long I have loved to wander among famous hills.
Lu Shan rises in splendour from the side of the Southern Dipper
A screen of nine folds of rainbow enfolds it,
Its shadow falls on the bright lake beneath
To reflect the darkness of its black depths.
In front the "Golden Gate" lifts up its twin peaks on high
The "Silver River" drops to fall beneath the "Three Rock" weir
Against the background of the "Censer" cataract.
Winding cliff and precipice lead up to the blue heavens
Blue green shadows and rosy mists reflect the morning sun,
Birds may not fly over the distant skies of Wu.
I climb the high path and gaze at the wide prospect of heaven and earth.
The great river flows into the distance; it goes but does not return.
The yellow clouds move in the wind for a thousand li
The white billows (of the river) encircle the hill in nine streams as though drawn from a mountain of snow.
I love to make a ballad of Lu Shan
For Lu Shan rejoices my heart;
In leisure I watch the "stone mirror" rock for it cleanses my thoughts,
The paths where Hsieh (Ling-yün) trod are covered by moss.
I have eaten the drug of immortality; my passions are spent,
I have stored up control of my mind and have thus attained the way;
In the distance I see the immortals in the coloured clouds;
Grasping in their hands the hibiscus as they go to the courts of the celestial city
I have an appointment with them beyond the boundaries of this world
Where with Lu Ao I would journey to the peace of another world.
